Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say early analysis suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
A high-ranking official stated the incident rendered him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
