The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
