An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, while staff have been advised to refrain from discussing secret matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a issue in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
This wider security situation underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
