British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
