Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
