Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
